Whaling and Communities

Whale hunting is a prestigious tradition that Siberian Yup'ik and Inupiat take pride in, enabling them to build community and stregthen realtionships. After successful whale hunts, these northern nations have feasts that bring the people together. Each indivdual is valued for providing food for their entire community.

Umialik (whaling captiains) discuss ice conditions and other related issues to whaling with the members of the community. Everyone is equal to weight their opinions with a umialik. It gives everyone a sense of pride and responsibility in contributing to the well being of their community.
